Wages For Wages Against image

Tunnel Tunnel and Wages For Wages Against (WFWA) are pleased to invite you to a weekend of discussions, lectures and workshops on the issue of artists’ payments and precariousness in the art world.

Friday 09.03.18, 19:00
Conference by Joanna Figiel (UK) in English. This conference will give an overview of the many problems faced by those trying to make a living, pursue a meaningful career, or simply survive while making artistic, cultural and creative work, by looking at the general history of art workers’ movements, ideologies and politics, and recent projects exploring and addressing these issues.

Saturday 10.03.18, 11:00–17:00
Workshop by Joanna Figiel (in English and French)

We will discuss issues related to precarious work and how they are manifested and contested in the context of contemporary art itself. We will look at how the constraints of competitiveness and individualism can be challenged and how we can manage our personal expectations and ambitions in the face of the reality of the art world and its economy. We will also look at the tools and strategies that art workers use when they wish to change their precarious working conditions locally, and what their limits are.

Joanna Figiel is a PhD student at the Centre for Culture Policy Management at the University of London. Her research focuses on changing forms of work, precariousness and politics in the creative and cultural sectors. She has worked with groups such as the Citizens’ Forum for Contemporary Art in Poland and the Precarious Workers Brigade in the UK, and collaborates with the Free/Slow University in Warsaw and the ArtLeaks collective.
