Nous image

During the month of December 2020, the photographic series Nous by Ève Marie Perrin is exhibited in the city of Lausanne, on cultural posters billboards.

‘After the death of George Floyd, many questions regarding police brutality in Switzerland and its racist nature were raised. I questioned myself a lot about the place of black people in the public space, and especially about their image in the Swiss media. Images build up collective imaginations. At a time when the black person became the center of discussions, broadcasts and articles, I wanted to give the participants of this photo series the total freedom to be placed where they wished to be in the public space. These same reflective processes were amplified during the demonstrations, because of the ambivalence between the duty to archive and the need to protect vulnerable intimate moments for some, difficult for others.

I then explained my approach to each person interested to be photographed. Indeed, it seemed crucial to me to put the person at ease through dialogue and to understand why they were willing to participate in my project. It became a channel to share in a particularly complex period for Afro-descendants. Going beyond the photographic aspect of it, we were able to discuss our feelings, emotions and reactions without having to justify any of them. More than as a project I would share with an audience, this process became a way to keep myself busy when I felt powerless, and to generate a sort of group therapy with people who could relate to one another.’
